Getting a child involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters is great for his or her development, growth, and self-esteem. We know parents want what is best for their child, so we partner with parents and guardians to match children with compatible Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Our Enrollment/Match Support Specialist maintains regular contact with parents, Bigs, and Littles to make sure that mentoring is a positive experience for everyone involved. Child safety is our number one priority.
Eligible Children Are:
Between ages 6 and 16
Living in a single-parent home or are facing special challenges
Interested in becoming a Little Brother or Sister
Once matched, Bigs and Littles spend 8-12 hours together each month. Because every child is unique, every match is unique in how they spend their time together. Some matches enjoy sharing outdoor activities like riding bikes, hiking, and going to the beach while others prefer to stay in and bake cookies, watch movies, or play video games. Every match is provided ongoing support and supervision by an Enrollment/Match Support Specialist. Families can count on the Enrollment/Match Support Specialist to make sure every match is safe and healthy, and provide assistance with community resources and conflict resolution.
Mentoring is not a quick fix. It is a long-term investment in helping a child to reach his or her potential.
Because BBBSNC faces an ongoing shortage of volunteers, many children are placed on a waiting list for a period of time before they are placed in a one-to-one match with a Big Brother or Sister. At this time we can only serve children living in Humboldt County. It is important that parents, children, and volunteers are able to travel to our office in Eureka for periodic meetings and events.
If you would like to enroll your child in our program, please call (707-445-4871) or email (info@ncbbbs.org) our office.
