Why volunteer as a Big Brother/Sister? |
|
Volunteering as a Big Brother/Sister is an incredibly rewarding experience for individuals who are looking to make a positive impact in a child’s life. Many children in our community are facing challenges in school or at home and need the care and friendship of an adult role model. BBBSNC is committed to creating and supporting lasting one-to-one relationships, and ensuring that the experience is positive for everyone involved.

How does one become a Big Brother/Sister? |

The first step toward becoming a Big Brother/Sister is a basic written application, which can be downloaded from the website CLICK HERE. All applicants will be interviewed in-person by BBBSNC staff and must submit to personal reference checks and a criminal background check. Once a Big has been accepted into the program, he or she will be matched with a child whose location and interests are similar.

Who are the Little Brothers/Sisters? |
|
Littles come from a variety of backgrounds and are usually facing challenges in school or at home. Many Littles are children who lack regular contact with one or both parents. All Littles are at least 6 years of age and have a need for friendship with a caring adult.

Who makes a good Big Brother/Sister? |
|
Anyone who is caring and reliable can be a positive role model for a child. Good Bigs have free time in their schedules, are good listeners, and are open to trying new activities with their Little. It is also important that Bigs have reliable transportation.

What is required of Big Brothers/Sisters? |
|
The minimum time commitment for all Bigs is 8-10 hours with his/her Little per month for one year. It is important that Bigs also maintain regular contact with their Enrollment/Match Support Specialist. Some matches set weekly meeting times, while others have a different schedule every month. Many Bigs and Littles decide to stay matched for several years, or until the Little turns 18.

What kind of support does BBBSNC provide for Big Brothers/Sisters? |
|
Professional Enrollment/Match Support Specialists are there to be available and make sure all matches are successful. Support is provided through regular scheduled check-ins, phone calls, and emails. This support includes feedback for Bigs, brainstorming for match activities, and conflict resolution.

Are there volunteer opportunities for people who are unable to be Bigs? |
|
There are many people who, for a variety of reasons, cannot be a Big Brother/Sister. We can almost always find a way for someone to help out in the office or at events. Click here for a listing of some opportunities.
